Session abstract: As demand ramps up for detachable, distributed smart clients, several coding patterns become more prominent. Examples include the Channel Adapter Pattern for handing multiple forms of data transport, the Observer pattern for updating UI elements automatically, and the Online/Offline pattern for dealing with the lack of a continuous connection. Each pattern will be illustrated in code and shown in the context of a complete smart client system. The Smart Client Application Block from Microsoft will be demonstrated as one way to satisfy the Online/Offline pattern.

Session abstract: Kevin will be exploring the mobile landscape from a developer’s perspective. There are several platforms that a developer must explore when embarking on a mobile project. The following are the key platforms worthy of investigation:
• WAP • Brew • Symbian OS C++ • J2ME • .NET Compact Framework
Kevin will provide an overview of all of these platforms and then jump into developing a mobile solution in each environment. For the demo, I will be building a very simple mobile podcatcher, myMobilePodcatcher, and also provide an introduction to podcasting. myMobilePodcatcher will pull an mp3 file from a remote server down to the device and launch a player to consume the file. For those unfamiliar with podcasting, I would encourage you to take a look at http://iPodder.org for a quick intro.
Kevin will first develop myMobilePodcatcher using Visual Studio 2005 leveraging the .NET Compact Framework 2.0 and spend some time showing the new mobile capabilities in VS 2005. The .NET Compact Framework application will provide the benchmark for the development of myMobilePodcatcher in the other environments. By the end of the evening you will understand why Microsoft Mobile and the .NET compact Framework rock!
Our Presenter: Kevin has a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas @ Austin and a Master of Computer Science degree from the University of Colorado @ Boulder. Kevin has applied this expensive education to significantly impact several software companies in Boulder, Colorado over the last six years. Kevin is also involved in the Boulder software development community as Vice President of the Boulder .NET User Group and member/presenter at the Colorado Mobile Developer group.
As president and founder of Big Ring Software, Kevin is anxiously awaiting the Mobile 2.0 revolution and in the interim is very active in Web 2.0, Social Networking, Tagging, and all things RSS. Working with Connected Innovation, Kevin architected, designed, and developed several enterprise-class Microsoft Mobile solutions including the following: • Single copy delivery mobile solution for the Denver Post/Rocky Mountain News • GPS mapping and mobility solution for Trimble Navigation LTD • Mobile paintless dent assessment and repair solution for the automotive industry • Mobile subscription capture solution for the Dallas Morning News
Kevin also developed smartFeed, the premiere Microsoft Mobile podcasting client, created smartRead, the Microsoft Mobile RSS news reader for NewsGator integration, and developed ToThePin Personal Pro virtual golf caddy, a PocketPC GPS solution that provides golfers with on course yardage and ASP.NET portal that stores the round data and provides analysis metrics.
In addition, Kevin developed a configurable and customizable ASP.NET web site and .NET customer feedback solution for the IZZE Beverage Company and provided architecture guidance and development oversight for Boulder Logic’s offshore ASP.NET development operations.
As Research and Development director at VisionTEK, Kevin architected and developed a revolutionary ASP.NET web application to integrate disparate data stores across Sacramento California’s Public Safety organization. The “Super Query” application provides users with the ability to query people, vehicles, and property in databases distributed throughout the state. At the time, Kevin needed the capabilities of Ajax when Ajax was still a cleaning solution.
Kevin also architected and developed two distributed Microsoft Mobile applications to provide unprecedented interagency messaging capabilities and to provide real time query capabilities to mobile public safety personnel. Kevin also architected and developed a Web based reporting utility for a SQL Server database and now wishes Reporting Services was available at the time. As a Senior Software Engineer at Pinpoint Technologies (now Zoll Data Systems ), Kevin architected and led a development team to develop the company’s next generation Computer Aided Dispatch system. Kevin also designed and developed, Nomad, the company’s mobile dispatch solution that is currently one of the company’s premiere offerings. |
